Gilbert & Goode Win Prestigious Constructing Excellence / CIOB Award

Gilbert & Goode won the prestigious Leadership & People Development Award at this year’s Southwest Built Environment Awards, for the outstanding work the Company has done developing the skills and capability of its own staff, as well as the wider industry in Cornwall.

Managing Director, Simon Caklais said “People development is core to the values of Gilbert & Goode and is a fundamental part of the continued success of the Company.”

Skills shortages are clearly a significant challenge in the resurgent construction market, which has been exacerbated by the short sighted lack of investment in new talent, coupled with the industry’s often misperceived poor image and inability to attract the best students.

Gilbert & Goode has remained true to its values throughout the recession, with its continued investment in apprentices and its staff development, as well as supporting the local supply chain and universities, colleges and schools and the Company is now reaping the rewards”, said Simon.

Gilbert & Goode is not only a place where apprentices can come and learn a trade, there are also opportunities to develop their expertise to become a skilled craftsman or to move into management roles within the Company. One of the many examples of this is Brendon Cocking, who joined the Company over 25 years ago as an apprentice carpenter and is now Operations Manager, part of G&G’s strategic management team.

Peter Hansford, the Government’s Chief Construction Advisor, commended Gilbert & Goode for their leadership, passion and commitment to developing the future capability and capacity of the industry in Cornwall.

The award ceremony, jointly hosted by Constructing Excellence and the Chartered Institute of Building, is regarded as the premier South West Regional Awards for the construction industry.

Winning the South West Built Environment Awards automatically qualifies Gilbert & Goode for entry into the National Constructing Excellence Awards, where the best that our region has to offer is pitted against the best nationwide.
