The Heart, Falmouth University, Penryn Campus

Gilbert & Goode have completed the construction of The Heart for Falmouth Exeter Plus which is the first space that visitors encounter when they arrive at the Penryn Campus; the striking gateway building houses a new reception and shop and is designed and built to improve the visitor experience.

This project has presented Gilbert & Goode with a number of challenges which have been successfully overcome. These include the practical and safety issues associated with working in a 'live' environment where the external area is adjacent to a very busy pedestrian and vehicle thoroughfare.

The new building has been designed by Bristol-based architects APG. The design has been developed to reflect the views expressed by students, staff and local residents at earlier consultation events. The building, which incorporates the extensive use of copper cladding, rises to a dynamic point on a true North Axis to form a sundial with points picked up across The Heart space.

With the health and wellbeing of users at its core, it also provides a sustainable environment through responsible sourcing, high levels of insulation, solar gain management and the use of natural light and ventilation.

The adjacent landscape has been greatly enhanced to define The Heart space; this enhancement includes a contemporary garden; sculpture in the landscape; a sundial piazza; a relaxation area with views across the Campus; stepped and terraced seating; and patterned paving.
